Boxer shrimp

The boxer shrimp, also known as a banded coral shrimp lives in the Red Sea. They live among the reefs and can be found as deep as 210m (690 ft)!  They only have a life expectancy of 2 to 3 years and are known as cleaner shrimp. They use their claws to remove parasites and fungi from passing fish. Their total length is around 60mm and their claws are twice the size of their body. They even have 3 sets of claws to enable them to clean. They use their very long antenna to signal their presence to other fish.  Unlike most invertebrates they have the unique ability of detecting other boxer shrimp; they do this through chemical signals.

Boxer shrimp can be easily identified by their striking coloration.  Their base is transparent however they are covered in red and white bands. The antenna is white and their bodies are covered in small white hairs.  Their abdomens are covered in spines. The female boxer shrimp is usually larger than the males. These creatures are monogamous which means they have only one partner at a time.

Boxer shrimp are found worldwide and can be seen by divers singularly or in colonies. These shrimp are usually respected by all sea creatures and they can even share burrows and holes with other species.  Often if a divers hand is near to these cleaner shrimps, they will hop on board and perform a manicure!
